It’s fair to say that, even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the ability to work remotely was already beginning to change the way we did business. In the wake of COVID-19, those transformations have been both sped up and perhaps made even more drastic. As a result, working remotely more and more seems like not a way to cope with our present situation but a window into the future of our global workforce. Of course, with a new working paradigm comes new ways to build connections and get ahead, so let’s look at a few ways you can do just that while working remotely.

  1. Offer Help

As we’ll see, a running theme with promoting yourself remotely is taking things you would’ve done in-person in the past and finding a way to adapt them to our online landscape. Offering help at the office has always been a good way to make connections and establish yourself as a good employee, and doing the same online can help as well. For example, if you see someone post in a Facebook group looking for an online skillset you possess, offering your assistance can help build a valuable new connection.

  1. Pick up the Slack

Slack was already becoming an important online tool for companies before the pandemic. Since COVID, it’s become essential for many. Not only can you set up a Slack group for your companies to help teammates communicate more effectively by posting in the same place, but you can also check other Slack groups and see if you can help and network with them somehow.

  1. Promote Yourself Digitally

Getting your name out there means getting it on the Internet these days. Starting a blog, podcast, or something similar can help build your name and brand.

  1. Network Via Hobbies

Connecting over non-work-related things has always been a great way to form work connections. Join online groups for the hobbies you love, chat and make acquaintances, and then reach out if you see someone with a workplace need you can fill or an opportunity that might help you.

Taking these basic steps can help you build connections in an increasingly online world.
